This is Why I Teach: How 13 Lessons Transformed a Student's Confidence

I have to share an amazing story about one of my students, Becky.

When we measure progress in language learning, it's easy to get lost in test scores and grammar rules. But the truth is, the most important changes I see are in confidence. Becky is the perfect example.

We've been working together for just 12 weeks, fitting in 13 lessons. When we started, Becky was hesitant to use her English in real-world situations. She was even too afraid to speak much to her yoga instructor, who only speaks English.

But recently, that started to change. As her confidence grew in our lessons, it began to show in her life. She started having more conversations with the instructor.

This new confidence had a direct result: the instructor realised Becky's English was actually quite good.

So, the instructor made a big request. She needed someone to translate the class from English into Chinese so the other people attending could understand, and she asked Becky if she could do it.

This was a huge step. Becky was understandably very nervous and wasn't sure if she could do it. She reached out to me and asked, "Do you think I'm ready for this?"

My answer was immediate: "Yes, you absolutely are!" I knew she had the skills; she just needed that final push.

The very next day, she did it. She stood up and successfully translated the entire yoga class, despite her nerves.

I asked her afterwards what was going through her mind and how it felt. Her answer says it all: "Honestly, I was terrified! My first thought was, 'No, I can't do this, I'll be too slow or use the wrong words.' But after the class was over and I saw that everyone understood, I felt... amazing. I was so proud that I actually helped them all, and I couldn't believe I had done it."

Think about that. The student who, just 12 weeks ago, was too afraid to speak to the instructor was now the instructor's official voice for the whole class.

It’s moments like this that show the real power of learning. It's not just about the lessons. It's about building the courage, step-by-step, to say "yes" to an opportunity.
