Travel English: 10 Words You Need at the Airport

🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!

Travelling to a new country is exciting, but navigating a busy international airport can be stressful if you don't know the right words.

Whether you are flying from Dublin or landing in China, these 10 words will help you find your way and communicate with airport staff.

The Vocabulary List 💡

  1. Check-in: This is the first place you go to drop off your bags and get your ticket.

  2. Boarding pass: This is your most important piece of paper (or digital code). You cannot get on the plane without it!

  3. Gate: This is the specific "door" where you wait to board your aircraft.

  4. Security: The place where officers check your bags and body for safety.

  5. Departure: This refers to flights that are leaving. Look for the "Departures" sign when you arrive at the airport.

  6. Arrival: This refers to flights that are landing. Your friends and family will wait for you in the "Arrivals" hall.

  7. Layover: If you don't have a direct flight, you might have a stop in another city. This break is called a layover.

  8. Baggage claim: After you land, follow the signs to this area to find your suitcases on the moving belt.

  9. Delayed: This means your flight is late. It is the word every traveller hates to see!

  10. Customs: The final stop where you declare items you are bringing into the country.

Why context matters

At an airport, everything is about timing.

Knowing the difference between departure (when you leave) and arrival (when you land) ensures you are always looking at the right screen.

Your Turn

Let's practice! Have you ever had a very long layover?
