Sentence Structure Saturday: "I'm About To"

🎥 Watch today's walking grammar lesson above!

Happy Saturday!

Today, we are breaking down a structure that helps you sound less like a textbook and more like a native speaker.

When you are on the verge of doing something, we use: "I'm about to."

The Logic

While "I am going to" can be used for plans later today or even next year, "I'm about to" is strictly for the immediate future.

If you have your hand on the door handle, you are about to leave.

Key Examples:

  • "I'm about to have a coffee." (The kettle is boiling!)

  • "I'm about to go to sleep." (I'm already in bed!)

Common Mistake:

Remember, "about to" is followed by the base form of the verb (the infinitive).

  • ❌ I'm about to having coffee.

  • ✅ I'm about to have coffee.

Practice Exercise:

What are three things you are about to do in the next ten minutes?
