One of the most interesting things you can talk about in a new language is how you have changed.

Whether you have moved to a new country, started a new fitness journey, or changed your career, you need a specific grammar "skeleton" to bridge the gap between your past and your present.

Today, we are mastering: I used to... but now I...

The Logic of Change 💡

We use "used to" specifically for things that happened regularly in the past but do not happen now.

It is different from the simple past because it emphasises that the habit is finished.

Examples of Transformation:

1. Location and Lifestyle

  • "I used to live in a small village, but now I live in a big city."

  • "I used to walk to work, but now I take the train."

2. Food and Health

  • "I used to hate vegetables, but now I love them!"

  • "I used to smoke, but now I run 5Ks."

3. Hobbies and Skills

  • "I used to play guitar, but now I play the piano."

  • "I used to speak only Chinese, but now I speak English too."

Pro Tip: Pronunciation 👄

When native speakers say "used to," the "d" is almost silent. It sounds like "yoost too."

Try saying it quickly to sound more natural!
