If you are travelling in Ireland, the UK, or the USA, you might be lucky enough to hear a waiter say, "This one is on the house."

If you don't know this expression, you might be confused.

Are they talking about a real house? Do you need to go outside? Not at all!

The Gift of the "House" 💡

In the world of business, a restaurant or a bar is often referred to as "the house."

So, if something is on the house, it means the business is taking responsibility for the cost. In other words, it is free for you!

Common Reasons for "On the House" items:

1. To Apologise

If the service was slow or there was a mistake with your order, a manager might give you a free drink or dessert to say sorry.

  • "We are sorry for the delay. Your appetisers are on the house tonight."

2. To Celebrate

If you tell a waiter it is your anniversary or birthday, they might bring you a special treat.

  • "Happy Birthday! This glass of champagne is on the house."

3. Just for Kindness

Sometimes, if you are a regular customer at a local cafe, the barista might give you a free cookie just to be nice!
