Hello everyone, and welcome to On Your Mark’s English! 👋
Today is Real English Expressions Wednesday, and we’re learning a very common and natural English phrase: “I’m afraid…”
Now, this doesn’t always mean you’re scared! 😅We often use “I’m afraid” to give bad news politely.
It’s another way of saying “I’m sorry, but…”
🧠 When do we use it?
We use “I’m afraid” in two main ways:
1️⃣ To say “no” politely
Sometimes, we need to refuse something without sounding rude.
Example:🗣️ Someone asks: “Can you help me move house this Saturday?”
✅ You say: “I’m afraid I’m busy on Saturday.”
This sounds softer and more polite than just saying “No, I’m busy.”
2️⃣ To give bad news or information
You can also use “I’m afraid” when you need to tell someone something they might not like.
Example:🛍️ Someone asks: “Do you have this shirt in blue?”
✅ The shop assistant says: “I’m afraid we only have it in white.”
It helps make the answer sound kind and respectful, even if it’s disappointing.
💡 So remember!
Use “I’m afraid…” to:
Politely say no.
Give bad or disappointing news gently.
It’s one of the easiest ways to sound polite and natural in English conversations. 🌟
