Tuesday Grammar: Why "I am drink coffee" is Wrong

🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!

Welcome back to Grammar Made Easy! One of the biggest "A2 hurdles" is choosing the right present tense.

In many languages, there is only one way to say "I eat."

But in English, we have two, and they mean very different things.

The Identity vs. The Action 💡

Think of the Present Simple as your identity or your "base settings."

It is what you do "always," "usually," or "never."

It doesn't mean you are doing it right this second.

  • "I speak English." (This is a fact about you, even if you are sleeping right now!)

Think of the Present Continuous as a camera recording your life.

It is only for what is happening "at this moment" or "this week."

  • "I am speaking English." (This is what is happening right now as you read this.)

Common Errors to Avoid

  • ❌ "I am live in Galway." -> ✅ "I live in Galway." (It’s a permanent state!)

  • ❌ "I listen to music now." -> ✅ "I am listening to music now." (It’s happening now!)

Your Turn

Let's practice! Look out the window or around your room.

  1. What is one thing you do every Sunday?

  2. What is one thing a person or animal is doing near you right now?

  3. Tell me in the comments down below!
