Why is this so hard?
Small words, big confusion. Many learners struggle with "In," "On," and "At" because they try to translate directly from their native language.
To fix this, we need to stop translating and start visualising.
We use the "Zoom In" Method.
Imagine a camera lens.
IN = General (Zoomed OUT)
When you are zoomed out, you see the big picture.
You see large areas and long periods of time.
Place: Enclosed spaces, cities, countries (e.g., "In the United States").
Time: Years, months, seasons (e.g., "In 2025").
ON = Specific (Zoomed IN)
Now, zoom in a little bit. You can see specific surfaces, lines, and days.
Place: Streets, floors, tables (e.g., "On Main Street").
Time: Specific days and dates (e.g., "On Monday").
AT = Precise (Zoomed ALL THE WAY IN)
Zoom in until you are looking at a single, tiny point.
Place: Specific points or addresses (e.g., "At the bus stop").
Time: Exact clock times (e.g., "At 3:00 PM").
The Perfect Example
Look at how the prepositions change as we zoom in: "I live IN the United States, ON the West Coast, AT my home address."
Your Turn
Complete the sentence: "The meeting is ______ Monday ______ 3:00 PM."
