Do you find it hard to tell the difference between live and leave?
You’re not alone! These two words look very similar, but they sound completely different.
Let’s break it down so you’ll never mix them up again.
1. Live – Short Sound /ɪ/
Live has a short vowel sound: /ɪ/ — just like in sit or fish.
✅ Examples:
I live in China.
They live near the sea.
We live close to the city centre.
This sound is quick and short. Your mouth stays relaxed.
2. Leave – Long Sound /iː/
Leave has a long vowel sound: /iː/ — just like in see or tree.
✅ Examples:
Don’t leave your phone at home.
She always leaves work at six o’clock.
Please don’t leave the door open.
This sound is longer. Your mouth stretches slightly when you say it.
3. Quick Trick to Remember
🧠 Live = short sound /ɪ/ (like in sit)
🧠 Leave = long sound /iː/ (like in see)
Say them slowly a few times until you can clearly hear the difference.
4. Practice Time!
Now it’s your turn!
Try saying these sentences out loud:
I live here. Don’t leave yet!
Can you hear the difference?
Practise a few times, record yourself, and write your own examples in the comments below.
