Sentence Structure Sunday: Mastering the word "Unless"
🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!
English has many ways to talk about conditions.
You probably already know how to use "If," but today we are learning a "skeleton" that makes your English sound more advanced: Unless.
What does it mean? 💡
The easiest way to understand unless is to think of it as "if not."
It tells us that one thing must happen first, or the result will change.
The Structure 🏗️
We usually put unless in the middle or at the beginning of a sentence.
Example 1: "You won't pass the exam unless you study."
Meaning: If you do not study, you will not pass.
Example 2: "I'll be there at 8:00 unless the bus is late."
Meaning: I will be there at 8:00, but if the bus is late, I will not.
Common Mistake Alert! 🛑
Because unless already has a negative meaning, we do not usually use another negative word after it.
❌ "Unless you don't hurry."
✅ "Unless you hurry."
Practice is the key
Try using this today when you talk about your plans or your goals.
It is a very common structure in professional and casual English.
