Vocabulary Boost: What to say when you are too busy

🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!

In your English classes, you probably learned the word "busy."

It is a useful word, but sometimes "busy" is not enough.

If you have a mountain of work, a hundred emails, or a very long "to-do" list, you need a stronger word.

That word is swamped.

The 3-Step Method to Mastery

1. See it in Context 👁️

Listen to how people use it in real life:

"I can’t come to lunch today, I’m absolutely swamped with this new project."

When we use this word, we are telling the listener that we feel "underwater" with work.

It is a very visual word!

2. Learn the Definition 🧠

Swamped (adjective) means being overwhelmed by an excessive amount of something, usually work or responsibilities.

It is much stronger than just saying "I have things to do."

3. Make it Your Own ✍️

Think about a time when you had too much to do:

  • "I am swamped at the office this week."

  • "After my vacation, I was swamped with messages."

Why use "Swamped" instead of "Busy"?

Using specific vocabulary shows that you understand the "feeling" of the English language. "Busy" is a fact, but "swamped" is a feeling.

Native speakers use it to explain why they cannot do something or why they are feeling stressed.
