Vocabulary Boost: Moving Beyond "Very Old"

🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!

When you are a beginner in English, it is easy to use the word "old" for everything.

You might have an old phone, an old shirt, or an old friend.

But what do you say when you see a building that has been standing for thousands of years? Using "very, very old" works, but using "Ancient" is much better!

The 3:Step Method to Mastery

1. See it in Context 👁️

Look at the word in a real sentence: "In Rome, you can see many ancient buildings that are over two thousand years old."

When we use this word, we aren't just talking about something from last year.

We are talking about something from a long, long time ago.

2. Learn the Definition 🧠

Ancient (adjective) means belonging to the very distant past.

We use it for things like the pyramids in Egypt, the Great Wall of China, or history books.

3. Make it Your Own ✍️

Think about your own life or interests:

  • "I want to visit the ancient temples in Greece."

  • "My grandfather has an ancient book from the 1800s."

Your Turn

Let's practice! What is an ancient place you want to visit?

Try writing your own sentence with the word ancient in the comments down below.

I will check your sentences and help you with your grammar!
