Grammar Made Easy: Mastering the Possessive 's
🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!
One of the first things English learners want to talk about is their relationships and their belongings.
However, many students try to translate directly from their native language.
They often say things like, "The name of my cat is Luna."
While people will understand you, it sounds a bit formal and unnatural.
Today, we are learning the "Short Cut" : the Possessive 's.
The Logic of Ownership 💡
In English, we like to put the "Owner" at the start of the phrase.
It tells the listener who is important before we talk about the object.
The Structure 🏗️
It is a simple three-step process:
Identify the Owner (My friend).
Add 's ('s).
Add the Object (car). Result: "My friend's car."
Common Examples:
"Lulu’s vocabulary list is ready."
"I am going to my mother’s house for dinner."
"Have you seen the doctor’s notes?"
Why it matters
Using the possessive 's makes your speech faster and more rhythmic.
It helps you sound like a native speaker because it removes unnecessary words like "of" and "the."
Pro Tip: I
f a name already ends in "s" (like James), you can just add the apostrophe at the end (James' car) or add another 's (James's car). Both are correct!
Your Turn
Let's practice! Find one object near you right now that isn't yours.
Complete this sentence: "This is my ________'s ________."
Tell me in the comments down below! :)
