Sentence Structure Sunday: Adding emphasis with "Not only... but also..."
🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!
When we describe things in basic English, we usually use the word "and."
For example: "The food is good, and the service is fast."
While this is correct, it can sound a bit repetitive.
If you want to add some style and emphasis to your speaking, you should try the pattern: Not only... but also...
How it works 💡
This structure connects two facts. It tells the listener: "Wait, there is more!"
It suggests that the second fact is just as important (or even more surprising) than the first one.
The Structure 🏗️
We place the first fact after "Not only" and the second fact after "but also."
People: "He is not only a teacher, but also a business owner."
Skills: "She can not only sing, but also dance beautifully."
Places: "Ireland is not only green, but also very friendly."
Why it works
It creates a "bridge" between your ideas. Instead of two separate sentences, you have one strong, professional sentence.
This is very useful for writing emails, giving presentations, or just having a deep conversation with a friend.
Pro Tip:
You can often leave out the word "also" in casual conversation, but using the full phrase will help you master the rhythm of the language!
Your Turn
Let's practice! I want to hear about where you live. What makes your home special? Complete this sentence: "My city is not only... but also..."
