Real English: Master the phrase "I'm off"
🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!
In your early English lessons, you probably learned to say "I am going now" or "Goodbye" when you want to leave a place.
While these are perfectly fine, they can sound a bit formal or "heavy" in casual situations.
If you want to sound like a local in London, New York, or Dublin, you should try using:
"I'm off!"
The Meaning of the Expression 💡
"I'm off" is a short way of saying "I am off to my next destination."
It signals to everyone that you are moving right now.
It is perfect for those quick exits when you are in a hurry or just finished with your day.
How to use "I'm off":
1. At Work
When your shift finishes or it is time to go home, you can say it to your colleagues.
You: "Finished my work for today. I'm off! Have a good evening."
2. With Friends
If you are at a café or a party and you need to catch a bus or head home.
You: "It's getting late. I'm off! Talk to you later."
Why it works
It is short, simple, and very friendly.
It shows that you are comfortable with casual English and understand the rhythms of natural conversation.
Your Turn
Let's practice! Imagine you are leaving your English class right now.
