Common Mistakes: Mastering the Third Person "S"
🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!
If you have ever forgotten to add an "s" to the end of a verb, don't worry. You are not alone! This is often called the "famous S mistake" because almost every English learner makes it at some point.
However, fixing this one small habit will instantly make your English sound more accurate.
The Golden Rule 💡
In English grammar, the Present Simple tense changes slightly depending on who is doing the action.
For most subjects, the verb stays the same.
But for the "Third Person Singular" (He, She, and It), we need that extra "S."
How it works:
I/You/We/They: "I play football." / "They live in Paris."
He/She/It: "He plays football." / "She lives in Paris."
It is all about the "S" sound 🔊
Even though it is just one letter, it is a very important signal for the listener.
It helps people follow your story more easily.
When you are practising, try to exaggerate the "S" sound until it becomes a natural habit.
How to Practice:
Look at the people around you and describe what they are doing or what they like.
"My brother loves pizza."
"The cat sleeps on the sofa."
"The sun shines today."
Your Turn
Let's practice! Can you fix this sentence for me? "My friend live in China."
Tell me the correct version in the comments down below!
