How to Say "It's Useless" in English

Sometimes, we want to tell someone not to do something because it won't help.

It is a waste of energy.

In English, the most natural way to say this is: "There is no point in..."

The Grammar Trap ⚠️

This structure contains a preposition (in). In English grammar, if you put a verb after a preposition, it MUST be a Gerund (-ING).

Many students translate from their own language and say: ❌ "There is no point to go." ❌ "There is no point to wait."

This is incorrect! You must change the verb:

✅ "There is no point in going." ✅ "There is no point in waiting."

Real Life Examples

  1. The Weather 🌧️ "It is going to rain all week. There is no point in watering the garden."

  2. Emotions 😢 "The mistake is already made. There is no point in crying about it."

  3. Traffic 🚗 "The traffic is terrible. There is no point in leaving now."
