Thursday Common Mistakes: Why "Home" is a Grammar Rebel
🎥 Watch the video version of this lesson above!
Welcome back to Common Mistakes!
Today, we are fixing a tiny error that reveals a lot about your English level.
It’s the "Go to home" mistake.
When you learn English, you are taught that "go" usually needs "to" to show direction.
You go to the store, to the doctor, or to bed.
But then you get to the word "home," and the rules change.
The Adverb Secret 💡
The reason we don't say "go to home" is because, in this sentence, "home" isn't just a place (a noun), it’s acting as an adverb.
Think of other words like:
Go outside
Go upstairs
Go there
You wouldn't say "go to outside," right?
"Home" works exactly the same way.
It describes the direction of your movement.
Common Phrases to Remember:
“I’m tired, I’m going home.”
“What time did you get home?”
“I’ll drive you home.”
Why it matters
Using "to" before home is a very "textbook" mistake.
It shows you are following a general rule but haven't learned the natural rhythm of the language yet.
Dropping the "to" makes your speech flow much better.
Your Turn
Let's practice! What time do you usually go home on Fridays?
