Saturday Story Time: Using Phrasal Verbs Naturally
🎥 Watch the video version of this story above!
One of the best ways to improve your English is to listen to stories.
Stories help you see how words "stick together" in real life.
In today's story, we meet a very excited puppy and learn two essential phrasal verbs.
The Story Recap
I was walking home yesterday when I saw my neighbour, Sarah.
She had a new puppy! I walked over to meet them.
The puppy was so happy that he started to jump up on my legs.
Vocabulary Breakdown 💡
Walk over: This describes the movement of approaching someone.
Instead of just "going" somewhere, "walking over" implies you are moving specifically toward a person or an object to interact with it.
Jump up: Puppies love to do this! It means to leap or spring upward.
Why Phrasal Verbs?
In textbooks, you might learn "approach" or "leap."
While those are correct, they are very formal.
If you are talking to a friend about a puppy, "walk over" and "jump up" are the words you need to sound fluent.
Your Turn
Let's practice! Do you have a pet?
Or is there a pet in your neighbourhood that you like to visit?
