Saturday Story Time: How to use "Call off" and "Put on"

🎥 Watch the video version of this story above!

If you have ever been to Ireland, you know that the weather can change very quickly.

One minute it is sunny, and the next minute you are looking for an umbrella!

In today's story, the weather forced me to change my plans, which gave us a perfect chance to learn two very useful phrasal verbs.

The Story Recap

I planned to go for a long walk today, but the weather in Ireland had other ideas!

It started raining very hard, so I had to call off my walk.

I put on my favourite sweater and stayed on the sofa with a book instead.

Vocabulary Breakdown 💡

  • Call off: This is a very common way to say "cancel."

We use it for meetings, sports games, parties, or even simple walks.

If you can't do something you planned to do, you "call it off."

  • Put on:

This is the action of dressing yourself.

You can put on a hat, put on your shoes, or put on a sweater.

It describes the physical movement of dressing.

Natural Flow

Notice how the story uses these verbs to show a shift in mood.

We move from a disappointment (calling off the walk) to a comfortable alternative (putting on a sweater).

Your Turn

Let's practice! What is one plan you have had to call off recently?

Or, what is your favourite thing to put on when it is cold outside?
