Saturday Story Time: Relaxing with Phrasal Verbs
🎥 Watch the video version of this story above!
A peaceful afternoon in the park is a perfect setting to learn English.
When we tell stories about our day, we often use phrasal verbs to describe small movements that keep the story moving forward.
In today's lesson, we look at two verbs that every English learner should know.
The Story Recap
Yesterday, I went for a walk in the park.
I went past a group of people playing music, and it sounded beautiful.
I was a little tired, so I sat down on a bench to listen for a while. It was very relaxing.
Vocabulary Breakdown 💡
Go past:
This verb describes the action of moving near something and then continuing beyond it.
You can go past a building, go past a car, or go past a group of friends.
It helps the listener visualise you moving through a space.
Sit down:
This is the opposite of "stand up."
It is a very simple action, but it is one of the most common phrasal verbs in the English language.
Mastering the Flow
Notice how these verbs connect the actions in the story.
First, there is movement (go past), then there is a choice to stop and rest (sit down).
Using these "small" verbs is the secret to moving from basic English to natural English.
Your Turn
Let's practice! When you go to the park, what do you usually do?
Do you walk for exercise, or do you find a quiet spot to rest?
