Hello everyone, and welcome to On Your Mark’s English.

Today is Thursday, and this is Common Mistakes! ❌

We’re fixing a mistake that happens because of direct translation: Open vs Turn On.

Many students say, “Please open the light.” 💡This is incorrect. ❌

🚪 OPEN / CLOSE

We use open and close for physical objects that have an opening.

Examples:

Open the door.

Close the book.

Open the window.

🔌 TURN ON / TURN OFF

We use turn on and turn off for electronics or anything with a switch or power.

Examples:

Turn on the light.

Turn off the TV.

Turn on the AC.

🧠 Remember

If it uses electricity, don’t open it. Turn it on.

✍️ Your Turn!

How do you fix this sentence?

“It is hot. Please open the air conditioner.”

Write your corrected sentence in the comments down below.
